Old Battery Scrap Rate in Delhi: Why Weight Beats Brand Every Time

A dead battery is the most valuable thing most Delhi households throw away without thinking. It is also the one where people most often accept the first number offered.

Lead is the whole story

Roughly two thirds of a lead-acid battery's weight is lead. That is what you are selling. Not the brand, not the warranty that expired, not the model number on the sticker.

This has one useful consequence: the brand on the label is irrelevant to scrap value. Exide, Luminous, Amaron, Okaya, Livguard, or something unbranded from a local assembler, all of it is priced the same way, by weight, against the day's lead rate.

Anyone who tells you a particular brand fetches a premium as scrap is either confused or hoping you are.

Why weight changes everything

Because price follows weight, the type of battery matters enormously:

Battery Rough weight Relative value
Two-wheeler 3 to 5 kg Lowest
Car 12 to 18 kg Moderate
Flat plate inverter 20 to 30 kg High
Tubular inverter 25 to 60 kg Highest

A large tubular inverter battery can be worth several times a car battery. This surprises people, who often assume the car battery is the valuable one because the car was expensive.

The exchange offer trap

Battery shops offer a discount on a new battery when you hand over the old one. This feels like a good deal, and sometimes it is. But the discount is priced against the new battery's margin, not against what your old battery is actually worth on the scrap market.

It is worth doing the arithmetic once. Find out what the old battery fetches sold on its own, then compare that against the exchange discount. If the discount is smaller, sell the old one separately and buy the new one wherever you like. You are not obliged to do both in the same shop.

Do not store a dying battery

A lead-acid battery past its life swells. The case bulges, the seams open, and eventually acid leaks onto whatever it is standing on. Once that starts, it damages the floor, and it becomes genuinely hazardous to move.

If yours is already swollen or leaking, that is not a reason to avoid selling it. It is a reason to get it collected sooner, and to say so when you book so the collection brings the right container and handling. What you should not do is tip it, carry it in a car boot, or try to clean it up yourself.

Where the battery should end up

Used lead-acid batteries are regulated waste under the Battery Waste Management Rules. They are supposed to go to recyclers authorised to process lead, because informal lead smelting is one of the more serious sources of heavy metal contamination around Indian cities.

This is worth asking about. A collector who cannot tell you where the batteries go is not necessarily doing anything wrong, but they cannot tell you they are not either. We collect and pass on to authorised recyclers, and we do not break or process batteries ourselves.

Getting the best figure

  • Sell it whole. A battery that has been opened is worth less and is more dangerous to handle.
  • Sell it sooner. A swollen battery loses nothing in lead, but a leaking one is harder to collect.
  • Weigh in front of the seller. The rate should be stated before the scale comes out, not after.
  • Sell inverter and car batteries together if you have both. One collection, one trip.

Common questions

Does a dead battery fetch less than one that still holds charge? No. Scrap value is lead weight. A battery that holds no charge at all is worth the same as one that holds a little.

Can you take it off the vehicle or inverter? Yes. Mention it when booking so the tools come along.

Do you buy the inverter as well? Yes, but it is priced as electronic scrap rather than by lead weight, so it is quoted separately.

Is there a minimum? No. A single two-wheeler battery is worth collecting, though it is obviously a smaller payment than a tubular unit.

If you have one to move, start with selling a car battery or selling an inverter battery and tell us what condition it is in.
